Identity. Leadership.

I bough a book just this past weekend titled Who Are We? And Should it Matter in the 21st Century?, by Gary Younge.

I was looking for a thoughtful book – a discussion, not a recount – something which would tie in politics and society together in a broad exhilarating sweep, rather than something that burrows deep into a specific topic. Most of all there had to be movement – and I think I’ve found the right book.

The book explores the concept of identity. Who are we? What is/are your identity/ies?  I haven’t read enough of the book yet, but already there seems to be all sorts of links between identity and everything else!

Take leadership, for example. We had a leadership workshop today and I came across this quote:

Becoming a leader is synonymous with becoming yourself. It is precisely that simple, and it is also that difficult.            – Warren Bennis

Becoming a leader. Becoming yourself. Yourself = your identity.

Becoming yourself…is simple yet difficult. Determining what your identity is, and coming to terms with your identity…is simple yet difficult.
